Unaware of Buie's work but inspired by an "all transistor" logic circuit described by Ruegg and Beeson of Fairchild, Thomas Longo led the design of the first TTL family, Sylvania Universal High-level Logic (SUHL) in 1963. Patented by James Buie of Pacific Semiconductor in 1961, TTL (Transistor Transistor Logic) emerged as the most popular logic configuration of the next two decades. At the very least, Thomas Longo definitely deserves some credit for the early development of TTL. This is not an uncommon situation when it comes to inventions. But he was the first to create an actual product with it, and supposedly he had no idea it had already been invented. When you can draw a 555's data sheet from memory, you'll have met your grandfather as a young man. Go get a Forest Mims book from Radio Shack and learn basic electronics. But part really is invention, and it is of phenomenal quality. Somebody would have discovered those if not Longo, and then their accidents would have dominated. By essential I mean aspects like the voltages, which are consequences of physical laws so deep we should say Longo discovered TTL, rather than inventing it. By accident I mean that many of the design features could have been picked to be (say) left handed or right, and it wouldn't matter-but everybody's got to drive on the same side of the road. It is more universal and more fundamental to modern society than the dollar or the English language.Ī bunch of that's accident, and some is essential, but some is very good design, foresight, and technical competence. If you ask any electronics person on Earth to design something and build it from Radio Shack parts, or design it to be repairable anywhere-it'll be TTL. I'm putting my kids to bed redditing and there's a TTL reference book within arms reach. ![]() Every electronics class in the world, from the maker space around your block to Digital Death at MIT, teaches TTL. ![]()
